CLÉMENT BORDERIE | Launch of monographic book «Le laisser-faire»
In situ 21 January 2025 - 23 January 2025Galerie Jousse Entreprise is pleased to announce the launch of Clément Borderie’s monograph “Le laisser-faire” on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 6pm to 9pm.
On this occasion, we will be presenting a selection of the artist’s works from January 21st to Jan 23rd at the gallery.
This book presents the artistic approach of Clément Borderie (1960, Senlis) from his early works in the 80s to his most recent works dating from 2024. The monograph is divided into three parts, which retrace the artist’s research in a non-chronological order: deposition – impregnation – appropriation.
The first chapter, déposition, opens on Clément Borderie’s research since the 1990s to define the exchanges between a form and its environment over time, to reveal the invisible elements that coexist in it. The process involves placing a raw cotton canvas in a pre-selected environment on a matrix, a structure designed to hold the canvas during a gestation period. The canvas becomes a photosensitive surface that captures and feeds on ambient particles: sun rays, moon rays, atmospheric precipitations, pollution, pollens…
The impregnation process described in the second chapter defines the practice of installing cotton canvas on pre-existing forms in the environment (tree trunks, wells, roofs…), which then become matrices. In this way, the work carried out by Clément Borderie develops a symbiotic relationship with the environment, disrupting that environment as little as possible.
Clément Borderie’s interest in all forms and surfaces that bear witness to the passage of time lies at the heart of his practice. He initiates an action of appropriation of these manifestations, which is developed in the third chapter. While wandering around, the artist notices objects and textures that he appropriates and designates as works of art. People receptive to his approach (craftsmen, retailers, farmers, etc.), also voluntarily pick up pieces in complicity with the artist choices and thus become participants in the creation of the works.
Several texts punctuate the iconographic presentation to offer a reading of this work at the crossroads of different temporalities – with specific commissions for this publication from art historian and critic Camille Paulhan, collector and founder of the Francès foundation Estelle Francès Lassere, art and environmental science historian Guillaume Logé, collector Daniel Lebard, gallerist Philippe Jousse, and writer Olivier Kaeppelin in an interview with the artist – as well as previously published texts by art critic Bernard Lamarche-Vadel (1989), gallerist Christiane Germain (2003), art historian and curator Domitille d’Orgeval (2020) and physicist Ghislaine Rios (2020).
