Oblomov
2001
interactive video
In a frame, the video image is subtly animated. Nearby on the wall is an illuminated red button. Pressing it brings the character to life. But after a few moments, he sinks right back into reflection, contemplation, or sleep. Loosely inspired by Ivan Goncharov’s Oblomov, the character in this interactive video aspires to idleness, though we know not why. He thereby confronts viewers with their own desire for action or narrative, at the risk of being contaminated in turn by the character’s why-bother attitude.
