Biography

Born in 1996 in Porto-Novo, she lives and works in Paris.

Maria Adjovi is a Beninese painter currently studying at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her work explores themes of intimacy and spirituality through a personal quest for redemption. After studying at the École Supérieure d’Administration d’Économie et des Métiers de l’Audiovisuel in Benin, she chose to dedicate herself fully to painting, determined to forge a distinctive visual language where her cultural, spiritual, and personal influences intersect.

Her practice is marked by the maternal figure, central to her work. Present both tangibly and symbolically, she embodies transmission, memory, and resilience. Her work is enriched by her theological education, reinterpreting religious symbols to examine her own penance and her quest for absolution.

Through her painting, Maria Adjovi seeks to offer a mirror to her own inner struggles while giving voice to the silences of existence. Her work is an invitation to profound introspection, a visual journey where each brushstroke is a trace of her personal path. “When I paint, I search for the truth. It unfolds through my intersecting gazes, the passing of time; the unfolding of my moments of existence.” Through this quest, each work becomes a cathartic act, where Maria Adjovi shares her experiences and her vision of the world.
