Galerie Jousse is pleased to present the new exhibition by artist Claudio Coltorti, bringing together a selection of recent works situated midway between figuration and abstraction.
The title of the exhibition — an expression which, in Neapolitan slang, may be addressed to a “man of no worth” — immediately introduces a deeply existential dimension. Uomo di niente places at its core not only man confronted with his own contradictions, but also the painter facing the very limits of painting and its place in the present day.
Yet within Claudio Coltorti’s painting there exists a quieter, more unsettling tension, one that belongs to the realm of the unspeakable, withdrawal, and a perception conceived as suspension. It compels us to look differently: to remain within opacity, to move through uncertainty, to accept that the image never fully reveals itself. Painting thus ceases to be mere representation and becomes instead an experience of time.
Perhaps Uomo di niente speaks precisely of this: of the necessity to rediscover a gaze capable of slowing down, inhabiting uncertainty, and resisting — if only for a moment — the brutal acceleration of the present (…).
