In 1956, France made considerable conceptual and technical progress when it presented the first house made\u00a0out of plastic materials. Thanks to the architect Ionel Schein, this project was able to be completed and was enthusiastically\u00a0received across the world.\u201d Presented at the Salon des Arts M\u00e9nagers (domestic household arts fair) in 1956,\u00a0this house remained a prototype. It was not until the project of urban architect and theorist Jean Maneval (1923-1986)\u00a0that a housing unit entirely made of synthetic material was mass produced and commercialised.<\/p>\n
Designed in 1965 and\u00a0industrialised as from 1968 by the company Batiplastique, Jean Maneval\u2019s \u201csix shell\u201d bubble was used to equip an experimental\u00a0holiday village set in Gripp in the Hautes-Pyrenees. This ensemble is made up of\u00a0twenty identical \u201cbubble-houses\u201d, factory-built, requiring minimum installation at the building-site and which, thanks\u00a0to their shape and their colour (white, green, brown) blend perfectly with the landscape. Each pod is made up of six\u00a0shells, which are joined together by waterproof, easily-removable seals, and is suspended on a metal framework, which\u00a0rests on a concrete base and supports the floor.\u00a0A spherical cap tops the whole. The shells are made out of methacrylate reinforced polyester.\u00a0Having saved and displayed the architectural elements of Jean Prouv\u00e9 on the one hand, and having been helped\u00a0by Jean-Philippe Mercier\u2019s research on the other, it seemed obvious that it was necessary to protect Jean Maneval\u2019s\u00a0holiday houses in Gripp. As if both had intended, from Jean Prouv\u00e9\u2019s \u201cemergency units\u201d to Jean Maneval\u2019s six-shell\u00a0bubble houses, with their ideal surface area of 36m\u00c7, the continuity of process appears as obvious.<\/p>\n
