This program features video works selected from the KADIST Collection to explore the intersection between history-making and history-bearing, identity-building, and collective memory. It has been conceived in connection with and in response to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondation-h.com\/exhibitions-fr\/memoria-recits-dune-autre-histoire\">Memoria: r\u00e9cits d\u2019une autre histoire<\/a><\/em>, a group exhibition on view at Fondation H curated by Nadine Hounkpatin and C\u00e9line Seror.<\/p>\n<p>Curated by Aude Christel Mgba (curator at Museum de Fundatie, Pays-Bas &amp; advisor for KADIST)<br \/>\nWith Bili Bidjocka, Bady Dalloul, Chitra Ganesh, Clarisse Hahn, Gabriella &amp; Silvana Mangano, Vonjiniaina Ratovonirina, Richianny Ratovo, Belly Sid, Guy Wouet\u00e9<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0After gaining independence in the 1960s, many formerly colonized territories had the responsibility to establish what would be the status of the \u201cfreed\u201d space. The majority \u2014 though not all \u2014 inherited the colonial structure, continuing to reinforce nation-building and adopting democracy as the universal value.<\/p>\n<p>The current political climate on the African continent clearly shows that this system has failed to take root effectively. In his song \u201cTeacher Don\u2019t Teach Me Nonsense,\u201d Fela Kuti reminds us of the fact that democracy, at least in what it embodies and carries within its historical background, is a colonial inheritance. Reflecting on both the past and his contemporary period, he predicts that this system will never work for the African continent. He even goes on saying that democracy is a \u201cdemo-crisis,\u201d a demonstration of crisis, or a \u201cdemo-crazy,\u201d one of pure madness. It\u2019s quite hard to refute this idea when looking at what is happening in the world today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeacher Don\u2019t Teach Me Nonsense\u201d is a program in three parts, evolving between the different states of mind in which the curator imagines a citizen might find themselves while living and experiencing the described context. Drawing from Fela Kuti\u2019s iconic song <em>Teacher Don\u2019t Teach Me Nonsense,<\/em>the program critically reflects on governance and societal structures within decolonial processes.\u00a0[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>The second part of the program explores the collective identity, resistance, and the place of the body. <a href=\"https:\/\/kadist.org\/people\/gabriella-and-silvana-mangano\/\">Gabriella and Silvana Mangano<\/a>\u2018s <em>There is No There<\/em> examines how political messages can be conveyed through physical actions like protesting or manifesting.
